Hoaglund concludes strong career on basketball court
LEROY – Brandon Hoaglund, like his Pine River basketball teammates, would prefer to be playing this week. The Bucks were 1-1 in the districts last week and ended a strong season at 19-3.
Hoaglund, a senior, had a strong year for the Bucks, who won the Highland Conference at 14-0. Their last win was an impressive victory over Evart in the district semifinals. The Pine River offense never looked better than in that game.
“We pushed the ball and shot really well in this game,” Hoaglund said. “Right in the first half, we came out shooting the lights out.”
In this particular game, the Bucks had been playing their best basketball.
“We went through a slump the middle of the season but we came after the last couple of games,” he said.
The Evart win came before the district finals against Beaverton when the Bucks struggled in shooting, both from the floor and free-throw line.
When they hit their shots “we’re pretty tough but we have definitely have to be able to play defense too,” Hoaglund said.
Through the season, Hoaglund was among the strongest weapons the Bucks enjoyed offensively.
“At the beginning of the season it was really good,” he said. “At the halfway point, I started getting into a slump. I’m starting to get out of it, which is nice.”
The Highland Conference title was sweet for the Bucks but they also wanted add the district jewel
“We want(ed) to make a push this post-season,” he said. “When you get farther into the post-season, you play tough teams all the time.”
