Highland Conference honors Evart players

EVART – Five members of Evart's baseball team recently received honors on the all-Highland Conference baseball team.

Receiving honors were seniors Preston Boyd, Jarek VanOrder, Jarrod Wheeler and Tyler Wirth and junior Jake McKinstry.

Boyd, McKinstry, VanOrder and Wheeler were all-league players while Wirth netted honorable mention status.

Boyd, a catcher, batted .435 with a .566 on-base percentage, three home runs, 31 RBIs, 12 stolen bases, four saves, 10 strikeouts and 14 walks in 25 innings.

“Preston was probably the biggest reason as many of our games came as close as they were,” said Evart coach George Sims. “His arm alone kept most runners from second base. He did an excellent job.”

VanOrder, a pitcher and infielder, batted .394 with a .578 on-base percentage and was 2-2-1 as a pitcher with 56 strikeouts and 17 walks.

“The second half of the year, he was our best pitcher,” Sims said. “He worked hard and improved on that.”

McKinstry, a pitcher and second baseman, had a .389 batting average with .576 on-base percentage and was 5-2 as a pitcher with 29 strikeouts and 21 walks.

“He was a very good infielder,” Sims said. “He was probably our most consistent pitcher.”

Wheeler was at a .288 batting-average wise with a .516 on-base percentage.

“Defensively was a big thing for him, being a 6-7 first baseman,” Sims said. “He saved a lot of outs for us.”

Wirth was a shortstop for the Wildcats who turned 11 double plays from that spot. Wirth developed a strong throwing arm to help the defense.
