EVART — Paul Higgins has taken over the helm of girls basketball coach for the Evart varsity team.

He replaces Larry Brown who resigned after last season.

Practices started Monday. Higgins took over the post in October. He coached 1997 to 2004 at Clare for boys and girls, JV girls five years, and freshman and eighth girls for a stint. He coached freshman boys five years and JVs for two. He’s currently living in Evart.

Higgins applied for the opening in a bid to return to coaching.

“I just wanted to get back into it,” he said.

Higgins played basketball at Clare and was honorable mention all-conference as a senior

Higgins noted that 24 girls had signed up for all grade levels. there were 15 total girls last season in the program but it appears the numbers will be up.

“We want to stress the defensive end and rebounding and trying to push the ball if possible,” he said. “I haven’t seen the girls so I don’t know what the skill level is right now.”

Jay Wallace will be serving as JV coach again.

The season starts Dec. 3 at Farwell and continues with a home game Dec. 6 against Chippewa Hills.

“The biggest thing is having kids that enjoy the game and take life lessons learned in basketball and apply them once they get out of school,” Higgins said, “and try to put some banners on the wall.”
