EVART — Haidyn Simmer has contributed in impressive ways for Evart’s basketball team as a freshman this season.

“It was a little rough at first,” Simmer said. “I wasn’t used to the speed, coming from eighth-grade basketball.”

Simmer found out in November he would be playing varsity as a freshman. He was both nervous and excited and said it took him halfway through the season to feel comfortable.

“I’m like a role player and I try to get points whenever possible,” Simmer said. “I need to box out. I want to get better on outside shooting.”

Evart played two games last week and beat White Cloud 59-52 on Feb. 5.

Donavin Reagan had 21 points and eight rebounds and Carter Pritchard had 11 points and eight rebounds Tony Hartsock had his best game of the season with six points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

The next day, Evart lost to Lake City 47-40 in Highland Conference action.

“Our lack of practice time coupled with playing on back to back nights took a toll on us this game,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “We started OK, but couldn’t find the basket in the third quarter, only scoring two points in the third. We had our chances to win but they sealed it with free throws and key rebounds.”

Evart entered this week at 5-11 and plays at Manton on Thursday.

“We have to play with more intensity,” Simmer said.
