REED CITY — Reed City’s boys track team has gotten off to a strong start and among the reasons is its younger athletes including weight throwers Jon Green, a sophomore, and sprinter Andre Jones, a freshman.

They’ve been competing with the varsity this season but had a special chance to showcase their talents with the JV track meet at home earlier this season

Green threw the discus 123-1 and the shot 41-1 to take first in both of those events.

Jones was first in the 100-meter dash in 11.76 seconds.

“I was pretty happy. It was pretty good,” said Green who, along with Jones, has been on the 4 by 100 team.

His farthest throw in the discus has been 129 and he’s hoping to throw it 145. Better form and repetition will be the keys.

His best throw in the shot put has been 44 feet. He’s hoping for 48 feet.

As he looks ahead, Green is hopeful he can do something in the postseason and go to state in the 4 by 1 and discus.

Green said he’s gotten faster from last year,

As a team, “we’re looking pretty good, we’re looking strong,” Green said.

Jones said the 200 is his best event. He clocked a 24.5 in that as his best time but is hoping for a 23 before the season ends.

It’s his first varsity season but he ran track in middle school.

He’s the anchor in the 400 relay.

“I think if we push ourselves we can make it to state,” he said, adding that the team overall “is petty strong. We have great athletes.”
