Gray making key contributions in last season for softball team

EVART – Dani Gray is in her senior season with Evart’s softball team and is hoping to help the Wildcats have a strong finish to the 2012 season

The Wildcats recently were 1-2 in the competitive Reed City Invitational.

“I think we started off really good and made a lot of improvement,” said Gray.

It’s her second varsity season and she’s been happy with her improvement.

“I think coach helps us improve,” Gray said, referring to softball skipper Josh Johnson.

Gray usually plays center field for the Wildcats although she played shortstop at the Reed City Invitational. Her favorite position is center field.

“I love to catch flyballs,” Gray smiled, adding that she has the quickness to go after flyballs and her arm has been effective in keeping runners wary while trying to advance bases when the ball is hit to the outfield.

She’s been happy with her hitting.

“But I get walked a lot,” Gray said. “I normally hit groundballs and then I try to use my speed.”

Gray has been one of only four seniors on a young Evart team.

“We’re basically all underclassmen,” she said. “We started off with some girls that didn’t know how to throw or catch. But now we’re doing great.”

A recent Highland Conference sweep over Marion has been among the season highlights.

“We just want to improve,” she said. “We’re trying to get better as a team.”
