Goodman sparks Pine River girls to strong start

LEROY — Pine River’s girls basketball team is off to a 2-0 start after wins against Reed City and Morley Stanwood last week, and junior KayLee Goodman continues to play a key role for the team.

The Bucks begin defense of their Highland Conference title at home with Evart on Friday.

Goodman was optimistic after her team’s late November scrimmage with Big Rapids, the second one of the preseason.

“It went a lot better than our first one did,” she said. “We have to rebound a lot better and play as a team.”

It’s her third varsity season.

Goodman figures on being a better overall player for 2016-17.

“I think I’ll be strong on defense,” she said. “I’ll be playing more aggressive.’

Goodman said her best scoring area is inside.

She also plays volleyball and softball and indicated she spent more offseason time in those sports. But Goodman is also confident in her basketball abilities.

The Bucks have everyone back from last season.

“We’ll improve a lot and will be a strong team in all areas,” Goodman said.

She expects McBain Northern Michigan Christian, McBain and Manton to be among the toughest teams her team will face this season.
