LEROY -- The season for Pine River started with a loss to Reed City but ever since, the Bucks have been perfect.

On Thursday, coach Shawn Ruppert’s team returned from the holiday break with a 69-42 road victory in Highland Conference action over McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

The win put Pine River at 6-1 overall prior to Tuesday’s game this week at Lake City.

Jamie Justin led a strong team effort with 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Cayman Gatt added 12 points and five steals for the Bucks. Kassy Nelson had 11 points, followed by Devyn Powell with eight points and three steals. Haley Raymond added eight rebounds.

Shooting sometimes is the aspect of the game that takes awhile to get back to normal after a holiday break. “But I don’t know, we still scored 69 points,” Ruppert said. “We just didn’t shoot like we normally do. Our defense could have been better.” Pine River will be home Friday against Beal City in another critical Highland Conference battle.

“Beal is undefeated so they’re not bad,” Ruppert said. “Lake City was undefeated until they played McBain (last  Thursday).

That was their first loss. Our defense is going to have to be better.”
