Girls basketball teams eager to resume action

LEROY — It’s been a longer break than expected for some girls basketball teams.

Wintry weather postponed both games last week for the Pine River Bucks.

Games last week against Elk Rapids and Marion were postponed because of the snow. That left Pine River with a three-game road trip starting this past Tuesday at McBain Northern Michigan Christian. The Bucks are scheduled to be at Lake City Friday and at Lakeview next Monday.

Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said he anticipated MNC and Lake City to be two of the tougher teams in the Highland, along with McBain.

“They’ve both got a chance to be pretty good this year,” Ruppert said.

The last time Pine River, 3-1, saw action was Dec. 19 against McBain.

“Three weeks off, and now 3 1/2 weeks, it’s been almost a month,” Ruppert said. “It’s not good.”

Evart had a game set for Lake City on the road Thursday but that was postponed. Coming up, the Wildcats have home games this Friday with Marion and Jan. 22 with  McBain. They were slated to have three games this week.

Coach Paul Higgins was hopeful his Evart team can get into a rhythm and be ready to play several games a week in upcoming weeks.
