LEROY – Cayman Gatt seemed to have the knack for coming up with clutch hits as a member of the Pine River softball team.

A recent case-in-point was earlier in May when Pine River nipped Manton in the second game of a doubleheader to clinch a sweep of the twinbill. Gatt’s two-run base hit sealed the second-game win.

Gatt, a junior, has played varsity since her freshman season. She’s been happy with her hitting and also with her play at shortstop.

“I played there last year and in my freshman year, I caught,” she said. “I think our whole team has improved. Since the beginning of the season, we’ve improved a lot. We have gotten better at defense and we’re more disciplined at the plate.”

Taking first place at the home Pine River Invitational has been among the highlights for Gatt and her teammates.

“Winning ‘Chicken Day’ is always big for us,” Gatt smiled, using the nickname her teammates call the event.

Getting bunts down was a top priority for the team which went on to win the Highland Conference title.

“Sometimes we get them and sometimes we don’t but we need to be able to do it all the time,” she said.

Last season the Bucks lost in the regional finals. This spring, they lost to Reed City in the predistricts. But Gatt and the team returns next year with hopes of regaining control of the district crown.
