LEROY — Dominic Garcia has had quite a season at 225 pounds for the Pine River Bucks.

Garcia placed second earlier this month at the regionals to qualify for the state finals.

It’s Garcia’s sophomore season. He transferred this school year to Pine River. He placed third at districts and entered the regionals with a 16-8 record.

At districts “I should have gotten higher, considering the fact I was seeded first,” he said. “I messed up in a bad match against Mio.”

Garcia has been happy in his first season in Pine River and said he’s learned a lot.

“A kid from Mancelona at districts, I had thrown a big lateral drop for third place,” he said, referring to the consolation round. “I wait for the other guy to take a shot, then I threw him into something.”

Garcia wants to keep working on his shot.

He was confident of making it out of regionals.

“I want to dye my hair blond with the rest of the guys,” he smiled, referring to a tradition that state qualifiers conduct at Pine River for wrestling

Garcia enjoyed the team season in which the Bucks won another league and district title and finished at 25-2.

“Everyone was inspirational to me,” he said. “It was like a big group of family members.”

The Bucks had 11 wrestlers move to regionals, a number that Garcia said was helpful.

“Especially with the guys that were there last year going to regionals and state,” he said prior to regionals. “I’m definitely nervous. It’s my first year making it out of districts.”

Now it’s his first trip to the state finals. He’s among nine Pine River wrestlers making it to the state finals this weekend at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
