Garcia set to compete at 215 pounds for Bucks
LEROY — Dominic Garcia considers himself fortunate to still be wrestling this season.
So does his Pine River teammates and coaches.
Garcia, a junior, will be wrestling at 215 pounds this weekend in Auburn Hills at the Division 4 state individual finals. He earned his berth by taking first at the individual regional last month.
He also was at state last season but didn’t place.
,Last weekend, the Bucks lost to Manchester in the state quarterfinals. But getting a regional team title in the Pine River gym was sweet for Garcia and his teammates.
“That was awesome,” Garcia said. “Last year, it was kind of a disappointment watching the other team get the regional trophy and we had to sit and watch at our own school. I’m very happy. We have a lot of younger underclassmen who look to us and see the hard work and they put in as much as we do. It’s an awesome highlight.”
Prior to the regional, Garcia was reflecting on how enjoyable it was being a district champ.
“At first I wasn’t even supposed to go to districts,” Garcia said. “I was given the opportunity. Someone broke a hand and had the opportunity to go.”
Garcia said his attacks, double leg moves and pressure on top have been among his strengths.
Action will start Thursday at The Palace of Auburn Hills and ends on Saturday.
