Garcia off to strong start for Pine River track team

LEROY —  Dominic Garcia is ready to lead the Pine River boys outdoor track team in his sophomore season.

At Coleman last week in the first outdoor meet of the season, Garcia led Pine River by going first in the 100 meters at 11.4. The Bucks finished first in the meet.

During the season, Garcia will also be in the shot put and 4x1 relay.

“I think I can do a lot better than what I did (at Coleman),” Garcia said. “I was impressed. The 100-meter dash, I need to work on my blocks.”

Garcia wants to get 43 feet in the shot put some time this season. “I need to work on my form,” he said, adding that he’s still working on the technique he wants to use.

His goals for the 100 is to get it down to 10.8.

“I definitely need to work on my blocks,” he said, “and probably have a couple of leg workouts.”

Garcia expects the Bucks to score points in his event. He likes the 4x1 team’s potential.

The Bucks are scheduled to be at Benzie Central Thursday and at the Morley Stanwood Invitational on Saturday.

“When it comes to team, we look to score as many points in any event as possible,” Garcia said. “We like to push each other and work hard.”

Garcia is hoping to help the Bucks be contenders in both the Highland Conference and regionals this season. It’s his third sport at Pine River, following football in the fall and wrestling in the winter.
