BIG RAPIDS — It’s the winter time version of free fishing weekend. This year, it’s Feb. 18-19 when individuals can fish for free.

Various events are taking place across the state. One of those is Fish the Chip, which is taking place in Mecosta, Montcalm and Isabella counties.

The days are Feb. 18 and 19, sunrise to sunset both days. Participants can fish the Chippewa River or any of its tributaries from any of the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy sites. Persons can contact Katie at (989) 772-5777 for more information.

Joe Spedowski from the Mecosta County Rod & Gun Club said earlier this week it’s “most likely” his group won’t be having free fishing activities this year at Thompson Lake, which is next to the clubhouse.

“We don’t think the ice is safe,” he said, noting it’s a spring-fed lake. “Where we fish is where the springs are. You go with the safety side. Right now, I’d say we won’t have it.”

Newaygo County is having a Dam To Dam 2017 event at the Croton Bay Trading Post, 8249 S. Croton Hardy Drive, Newaygo, on Feb. 18.

Participants can fish on Croton Pond at an event sponsored by Croton Bay Trading Post, WLAV and Leinenkugel For more details, call (231) 652-2250.

Another event is Family Ice fishing at the Carl T. Johnson Hunt & Fish Center in Cadillac. The Outdoor Skills Academy Pro Staff will be at the center for an on-the-ice experience and will show individuals how to fish.

It’s noon to 4 p.m. Participants can call (231) 779-1321 for more information.
