Four birdies and an eagle: Big Rapids golfer sizzles in cold weather

Welch leads Big Rapids to CSAA jamboree win

HOWARD CITY -- The Big Rapids boys golf team took first in the opening Central State Activities Association event at Tri County’s Whitefish Lake Golf Course on Wednesday.

Playing conditions were challenging with the cold weather but Luke Welch and the Cardinals were sizzling on the course.

Big Rapids shot a 329.  Reed City took second with a 359 and Chippewa placed sixth with a 411 out of the 12 conference teams playing.
The Cardinals were led by Welch who shot a 2 under 70.

‘Luke had four birdies and an eagle,” Big Rapids coach Mark Posey said. “He hit 14 greens in regulation. Luke is a great player and it is good to see him playing well in the opening CSAA event.”

Preston Younge took third with an 80. Zach Steers shot an 88. Also scoring for Big Rapids were Kyle Schroeder (91), Brendan Pippin (92) and Jack Ruggles (97).

"It is early in the season and I like where our team is,” Posey said. “We have lots to work on and learn and I think they are figuring it out. We have some big tests in the coming weeks and we are looking forward to playing well.”

For Reed City, Fischer Morrison shot a 78, followed by Michael Perri (89), Nick Wirgau (90), Isiah Zelinski (100), Evan Pullen (101) and Ty Kailing (105).

Cameron Morgan had an 82 for Chippewa Hills, followed by  Brandon Slasor (91), Justin Birch (110), David Remus (128), Ashton Vogel (138) and Brady White (142).

Big Rapids is set to host a CSAA jamboree on Tuesday.
