REED CITY  — The holiday season is here, but for former Reed City athlete Amanda Steig, the softball season isn't that far off either.

Steig, a standout player for the 2012 Coyotes state quarterfinalist team, is now at Cleary University after finishing a two-year stint at Grand Rapids Community College.

She recently completed the fall softball program at the four-year school.

"We had a few tournaments and doubleheaders during the fall," Steig said. "The coach's main emphasis, since this is a first-year program, was to play everyone everywhere to see where everyone fits the best. The fall season was a test run for us, I'd call it."

Fall softball opponents in scrimmages included Saginaw Valley, Delta College, Madonna, Jackson Community College, Lansing CC and Concordia.

The season will officially start during spring training in Florida. The team leaves Feb. 22 for Coco Beach for spring games.

"The last two years, I played outfield for my previous school," Steig said. "Here, I'm a catcher. The fall was a practice for me to get back into the technique again. It's been two years. I've learned a lot and I've gotten better. My hitting from last spring to the fall has improved dramatically just from the new coaching."

The level of competition will be different at her new school, Steig indicated.

Steig also played basketball at Reed City. Her dad, Roger Steig, is the current Reed City softball coach.
