Former Reed City runner makes his mark at Ferris
REED CITY - Brandon Wirth has been able to get his taste of cross country and outdoor track on the collegiate level at Ferris State.
But he's disappointed the outdoor season has been canceled because of the coronavirus.
"It was really good," Wirth, who was a standout in cross country and baseball at Reed City said. "I didn't expect the work load that was coming but I got through it. It was a great first year. I learned a lot. I know what to improve on for next season. The team is great. They're a fun group of guys. They love to compete. They like being underdogs and fight their way up."
Highlights for Wirth in the fall included a PR at Louisville in 26:26 in the 8K and being on the starting team for the regional meet for a chance to go to nationals.
"Both of those were goals I had and I achieved them. I was really excited," he said.
Wirth said he was consistent at indoor meets during the winter.
His PR indoor was a 9:12.96 at Saginaw Valley for 13th place.
"It's my first year running indoor track and field," he said. "You had to get used to running indoors. It was a fun experience. I'm looking forward to next year since now I know what to do.
"I love competition regardless of what the sport is," he said.
