Former Pine River state wrestling champ enjoying strong career at Michigan State

LEROY — Luke Jones has had a strong collegiate wrestling career at Michigan State University.

But he recalls with fondness his state championship days at Pine River.

For the second straight season, Jones and some of his Michigan State teammates helped with the Pine River Summer Wrestling Camp at the high school.

“We have our own at the MSU facility,” said Jones, indicating that he’s been at about five such summer sessions.

“We pretty much try to hit home the fundamentals and have them practice over and over,” Jones said.

Jones started at 197 last season in his third year.

“This year, I’m hoping to be All-American,” he said. “I’m excited for the season.”

He’s hoping MSU will be among the top teams in the Big Ten.

He is listed as a junior for this season after having a redshirt year.

As a sophomore, he was 21-15 overall, 5-7 in duals after taking on ranked competition the entire season, and was 16-6 in open tournaments. He took third and went 5-2 at the Reno Tournament. He was third at two other tournaments.

Jones was 8-6 in his redshirt freshman season.

At Pine River, Jones was a four-time conference champ and state qualifier.

“I graduated from here so I wanted to come back home and see the others and have a fun time wrestling with them,” he said.
