Former Coyote set to join Alma College football program
REED CITY — While Reed City’s football players were working out on their practice field Monday night, a familiar face was in an adjacent area trying to get himself ready for a new venture.
Garrett Benson, who was a standout for the CSAA championship team last year, will be going to Alma College later this week and will join that school’s football program.
Benson was a running back and outside linebacker for the Coyotes. He’s going to Alma as a running back.
“During football (last season) they were giving me offers and telling me they wanted me to come visit,” Benson said. “But I made my decision last spring.”
Olivet, Concordia (Mich.) and Trine also contacted Benson.
“I like the offense they’re doing next year,” Benson said. “Alma was a prime location and is around a lot of things I want to be around. The campus is nice, and not that big.”
Alma runs a pistol style Oregon offense, Benson noted.
Camp starts on Thursday at Alma. He’s been staying in shape via various methods including playing basketball.
“Once in awhile I’ve come up here doing tire dragging,” Benson said. He added that Justin Danneels, another Reed City graduate from last year, is also planning on going to Alma for football.
Dakota Gogolowski is also presently with the Alma program.
Alma also has a JV program.
“I’m going for varsity,” Benson said.
