Five area wrestlers headed to state finals

Reed City sending pair; Bucks qualify three for tournament at Auburn Hills

REED CITY — Two Reed City wrestlers will be advancing to the Division 3 state finals on March 1-3 at the Palace of Auburn Hills by virtue of their top four performance at the Farwell regionals on Saturday.

Matt Mcgahey advanced by placing fourth at 103 pounds with a 2-2 record for the day and is 34-19 for the season. Adam Kehr was 2-2 and fourth at 135. He has a 38-13 season record.

Matt McDonald was 1-2 at 285 and did not place. He ends his season at 36-12.

“Matt was in his first year in the varsity lineup for us,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig.

The Pine River Bucks will be sending three grapplers to the individual state finals March 1-3 to The Palace of Auburn Hills. The top four that finished at the Division 4 regionals advanced to the state meet.

At regionals, Nixon was first at 125 and Abel Langworthy first at 130. Cason Rawson was second at 152.

“It was a good day for those three, but we had hoped to get more out,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “The last couple of rounds, we had some tough matches that didn’t quite go our way. But it was a solid showing of the three that did place.”

The team season ended on Feb. 15 for the Bucks at Montabella. They defeated Sanford Meridian 42-28 in the semifinals and lost to Shelby 49-25 in the finals.

“We wrestled well against Sanford Meridian,” Jones said. “Against Shelby, we had to have things happen like clockwork. Shelby is No. 3 in the state.”

Double winners for the night were Matt Kelsey at heavyweight, Nixon at 125, Langworthy at 130 and Larry Kissinger at 145.

Pine River’s final team record was 21-10.
