Evart wrestlers set for upcoming challenges
EVART -- Evart's wrestling team heads into a critical part of its schedule.
Evart's action on Saturday at the Alma Invitational was weathered out.
The Wildcats are slated to wrestle in a quad on Wednesday at Lake City and at Lakeview on Saturday at an invitational.
The Wildcats had home matches on Jan. 8, falling to Pine River and Benzie.
"We did wrestle well," Evart's Ben Byrant said. "Reese Ransom had a nice night. Sam Bailey won both of his matches, Cole Hopkins won both of his,"
Meanwhile, Dominic Malicki-Lancaster, a senior, continues to have an impressive first year of varsity wrestling.
"I had talked to him (about wrestler) during football season," Bryant said. "He had a really successful fall playing guard for us. He's a big strong kid. He works his butt off in the weight room. I tried to talk him into it last year. This year, he decided to give it a shot."
As soon as wrestling practices started in the preseason, Malicki-Lancaster started his career in the sport.
"As a first year wrestler, he's doing a good job," Bryant said. "It takes years for a guy to get comfortable with knowing the moves and able to do everything and know which techniques to use. It's a little different than the other sports."
His first match was a loss to a Coleman opponent.
"When he uses his power, he does very well," Bryant said.
"By the end of the season, he's going to be solid."
Malicki-Lancaster, a heavyweight, was fourth at the St. Louis Invitational on Jan. 4.
