BIG RAPIDS —Evart’s varsity wrestling program continues to make progress in its four-year existence.

The Wildcats were 2-3 during the Big Rapids Cardinal Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.

The wins included a 60-12 triumph over Big Rapids, and a 42-34 edging over West Catholic. Losses were 48-33 to Orchard View, 54-15 to East Kentwood and 74-6 to Hastings.

Leading wrestlers for Evart were Reese Ransom (135), Darren Gostlin (103) and Jonah Smith (160), who were 4-1, while Caleb Parish (heavyweight) was 3-2.

“We did very well,” Evart coach Ryan Hopkins said. “We finished just a touch below where we wanted to be. It’s a bunch of young kids and they’re battling hard. I’m very impressed with the boys.”

“It was pretty good competition,” Gostlin said. “I like wrestling tough competition.”

It’s his fourth year of the program, but Hopkins said he’s filling most weight classes.

“By next week we should be voiding only two classes,” Hopkins said.

East Kentwood defeated Traverse City West in the title match.

Evart opened the season at Coleman on Wednesday.

The Wildcats lost to Saginaw Nouvel 31-30 and beat Coleman 42-6.

Gostlin, Ransom, Hunter Maxwell (189) and Smith were 2-0.

Evart is home Wednesday against Lake City, Forest Area and Houghton Lake.
