Evart wrestler wins narrowly to remain undefeated

Hopkins among the local first-place winners at Reed City Invitational

REED CITY – Evart’s Cole Hopkins is still undefeated but it wasn’t easy after edging a talented opponent from Chippewa Hills in the 175-pound title match of Saturday’s 38th annual Reed City Wrestling Invitational.

There were 24 teams at the tournament and more than 300 individual matches performed by wrestlers in the high school gym.

Hopkins, who was 55-0 last season is now 29-0, but for the second straight week had a tough match against Chippewa Hills’ sophomore Austin Humphrey. He won 3-1

“I wrestled him last week in Lakeview and it was 5-3,” Hopkins said. “He’s a strong kid.”

Hopkin, a senior, doesn’t expect to face Humphrey again this season. They are both in different conferences. For the postseason, Evart wrestles in Division 4 and Chippewa Hills in Division 3.

Reed City placed eighth out of 23 teams and had two champions with Bryson Hughes at 190 going 3-0 and Wyatt Spalo at 285 going 3-0.

Carter Johnson was 2-2 and placed fourth at 106. Noah Morgan was 2-2 at 215 and placed fifth. Andrew Kiaunis was 2-3 at 157 and placed sixth. Izaiah Lentz was 1-3 and placed sixth at 144. Barron Bowman was 2-3 at 113 and placed sixth.

Other RC wrestlers with wins were Myles McCarty at 132, Elijah Lentz at 138 and Noah McKenney at 150.

Reed City will be at Lakeview on Wednesday.
