EVART – Cole Hopkins doesn’t know how much longer he will stay undefeated as a wrestler for the Evart Wildcats.

But the Evart junior is definitely hoping to go undefeated at the state finals later this winter.

When Hopkins took first place at the Reed City Invitational last weekend, he improved his record to 33-0.

He was 3-0 at Reed City at 171 pounds.

“We saw some guys today plus a couple of guys I haven’t seen,” Hopkins said. “It was good to see some new competition. I just try to get better every single match. I was really good on my feet and got a lot of takedowns and was able to control guys on top.”

Hopkins expects to see even tougher competition as the season continues to unfold.

He defeated a Gladwin wrestler, ranked No. 2 in the state at 189 pounds, in a close 3-1 match.

A year ago, Hopkins was undefeated before losing his final match of the season in the state finals title round and settling for second place. It’s obvious his goal is to go all the way this year.

After the Reed City Invitational Hopkins commented on his satisfaction with how well the team is doing.

“All of our guys wrestled well today,” he said.

The Wildcats are hoping to save their best for last. Evart was scheduled d to be at Kingsley for league duals on Wednesday and will be at the Montabella team invite on Saturday. The conference meet is Feb. 5 and the team individual districts are Feb. 9, followed by individual districts on Feb. 12. The regionals are the following week.
