Pioneer photo/John RaffelEVART – Evart’s wrestling team continues to have a successful season with the likes of junior Alex Burhans leading the way.
He wrestles at the 285-pound division and this is his first high school season. He had not previously wrestled on any level.
Burhans placed fifth at the Reed City Invitational on Jan. 22. His involvement in football made him decide to come out. His teammates encouraged him to come out for the team and he’s extremely happy he did.
He was 3-1 at Reed City and after that meet had a 15-8 record. Being pushed by the coaches is the key to his success, Burhans said. The neutral position has been his strength, he indicated. He wants to improve on all aspects of his wrestling.
But Burhans said he’s looking to make sure he does not make any costly mistakes during any of mistakes.
“I want to take first place,” he said of his future goals
Burhans also also been impressed with the team’s performance so far this season.
Burhans wrestles and also plays football and baseball at Evart.
“Football is my main love,” he said.
Evart is expected to wrestle Saturday at Pine River in the Highland Conference tournament. The individual and team districts will be next week.
