Summer girls softball action in the LAT League, which includes Evart, Pine River and Reed City, began on Monday and featured a doubleheader sweep for the Wildcats over Lake City.

Playing at home, Evart swept Lake City 10-4 and 10-2. The first game went six innings and the second game went four innings

Chelsea Bengry was the winner of the first game while Sam Bressler took the victory in the second game.

Hitting leaders throughout the night for the Wildcats were Bengry, Dana Casey, Magdalen Hyde and Elizabeth Naranjo.

“We hit OK,” said Evart assistant coach Gary Bengry. “We played pretty good defense. We hit when we needed to.”

Pine River and Reed City both lost two games at the Bristol Fields.

Pine River lost to Cadillac 8-7 in its first game. Alexis Stokely had a two-run double and Brooke Sebastiano a key single for Pine River. Jandney Mattson had a hit for PR.

Brooke Pennington and Paige Esiline handled the pitching duties for Pine River.

Pine River lost 2-1 to Manton-Mesick in the second game. Pennington and Stokely pitched for the home team. Mattson had a single along with Stokely.

“We’re going with a younger group of kids,” said Pine River coach Laura Mumby. “We’re giving them opportunities to play. We have some kids at Mount Pleasant on Thursday. Some play here on Mondays and there on Thursday. It’s nice to have the kids together. Having 16 here shows a lot of interest.”

Reed City fell to Manton-Mesick 5-4 in the first game and 14-1 to Cadillac in the second.

Courtney Morgan pitched the first game for Reed City while Julianne Griffin and Sam McDonald saw action in the circle the second game. McDonald and Morgan were among the key hitters for RC.

Reed City coach Roger Steig noted that he was missing five girls from the team who were at a basketball camp.

“It works out well became we had a combination of our junior high, varsity and JV teams mixed into it,” he said.

Reed City plays at Mount Pleasant on Wednesday.

In LAT league action next Monday, Pine River faces Lake City and Evart takes on Reed City at 6 p.m. at the Bristol Ball Fields. At 7:30 p.m. at the same location, Evart faces Pine River and Reed City meets Lake City.
