Evart whips Central Montcalm and Farwell, ready for Reed City

EVART —  Next up for the Evart Wildcats: the Reed Coyotes.

Evart improved to 3-0 Friday night by winning at home the third straight time against Central Montcalm 86-49 on Friday.

It was all Evart from start to finish.

The Wildcats built a 26-11 lead after the first quarter and improved it to 38-26 at halftime and 60-42 after the third quarter.

Danny Griffin led the Wildcats with 22 points, followed by Robert Taping with 16 points, Andrew Bengry with 15 points and Noah Drake with 10 points, 21 rebounds and eight assists. Everybody on the Evart roster scored.

“They kind of took it to us down (at Central Montcalm) last year,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “We brought up some video and watched from last year. They lost a lot last year and are rebuilding. We were young last year.”

Morgan admitted that a 3-0 start has the Wildcats in an upbeat, but cautious mood.

“You couldn’t ask for a better opening week,” he said. “We’re still a young team and we’ve grown a lot from last year.

The Wildcats have their first road game of the season Wednesday night at Reed City.

“We’re really looking forward to Reed City,” Morgan said. “That will be a good test for us.

Evart improved to 2-0 on Dec. 8  with a 74-39 nonleague victory over Farwell. The Wildcats were up 20-5 after the first quarter, 40-18 at halftime and 62-30 after the third quarter.

Tapling scored 17 points while Griffin had 16 and Drake and Cody Pritchard had 11 apiece. Trevin Ladd added 10 points.

“We had a lot of balanced scoring, Morgan said. “Coming off our first two games, at 2-0, we’ve played well.”
