Evart volleyball team set for districts

EVART — Evart’s volleyball team is getting set to host districts next week.

Manton and Lake City play Monday at 7 p.m. The winner faces Evart at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Pine River plays McBain at  6 p.m. The title match is Thursday at 7 p.m.

Last week, Manton had the scoring touch while Evart couldn’t counter effective enough in a Highland Conference volleyball battle (Oct. 20) that was the Wildcats’ home finale for the regular season.

The Rangers swept the Wildcats 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 in a match where both teams wore pink in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness night.

Seniors for the Wildcats are Loraine Foster, Ashley Hopkins, Meron Kebede, Mikayla Wallace and Allyssa Witbeck.

“We worked hard for the past couple of weeks,” Evart coach Katie Nostrant said. “We’re going to miss our seniors. They were a strong part of our program.”

Evart never led in the third game but had it tied early 5-5. McKenzie Hughes had a block and point to lift Manton to a 10-6 lead. Wallace had a tip for Evart to cut the Manton lead to 12-7. She had a tip later, followed by a Witbeck kill to cut Manton’s lead to 18-11. Haley Taylor served a pair of aces for Manton, which took a 21-13 lead. Kaylee Lutke’s block ended the match.

“We played strong,” Nostrant said. “We didn’t pull it all the way through but we played strong. We have to fight a little harder.”

Sierra Barnett and McKenzie Kimball had two aces apiece. Witbeck had three kills and Hopkins and Loraine Foster had two kills each. Witbeck added four digs and Danielle Beasley had seven digs.

“We’ve been struggling with intensity and have been very very inconsistent,” Manton coach Nicole Helsel said. “It felt like they came together. We served really strong. Our offense clocked a little bit.”

Evart remains winless overall and is 0-6 in the Highland while Manton improved to 7-17 overall and 1-4 in the Highland.

Evart was at Pine River Tuesday night to close the dual part of the conference season.
