Evart volleyball team closes summer season
EVART — The volleyball season isn’t that far off and Evart coach Cindy Zielinski and various members of the team have been working out in recent days to get ready.
The final open gym for the Wildcats ended on Thursday. The sessions have been conducted 9-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. They began after the Fourth of July.
“We do a little bit of playing, drills, just trying to get the basic stuff in,” Zielinski said.
An average of six girls have usually been attending the sessions.
Next week, the focus will be on conditioning. Tryouts are Aug. 10, 11 and 12.
“It will depend on the numbers we have,” Zielinski said. “If we don’t have enough numbers, we’ll get right into drills and stuff.”
Several of Zielinski’s volleyball players have been involved in other sports during the summer such as basketball and softball. The Wildcats will get into volleyball competition right away with a tournament Aug. 20 at Chippewa Hills.
Zielinski is entering her sixth year as varsity volleyball coach.
Among the participants at a recent Evart volleyball camp was Mikayla Wallace, who will be an eighth grader this fall. She also played some basketball this summer.
“It gets you ready for next season,” she said.
Chelsea Bengry will be a senior for the Wildcats this fall.
“I’ve been coming to open gyms. We’ve had a few girls every day,” she said. “We still have (basketball) open gyms so we can lift weights. We have those whenever we can.”
Bengry, who also saw some softball action, figures on being a key net player for Evart’s volleyball squad, and said she’s been focusing on the basics.
Ditto for Stephonya Hamilton who will also be a senior. She’s been working on basketball and volleyball this summer. She’s a setter for volleyball.
“We’re getting the feel back into volleyball,” she said. “You want to stay refreshed.”
