Evart track teams bidding for success

EVART — Evart's track teams have two new coaches with Amanda Langell for the girls and Dennis Peacock for the boys.

Now all they need, like another other track team, is warmer weather.

Both teams were indoors Friday at the Lakers Challenge at Grand Valley State University.

But the Wildcats took home six medals.

Freshman Mara VanOrder placed eighth out of the third heat in the 800 meter run. Sophomore Tabitha Turley medaled in the 60-meter dash. They were both in the 4 by 600 meter relay team, which include Raigan Clark and Amanda Farrell and picked up a medal.

Langell noted that some of her athletes were on a school trip.

Along with Turley in the sprints and VanOrder in the distances, the Wildcats expect to get points from Kirsten and Katy Parsons in the shot put and discus.

Jessica Tea in the high jump and Grace Hamilton in the distances will also give points for the Wildcats.

“We don't have all that much depth,” Langell said. “We'll spend a lot of time on individual performances getting PRs (personal records).”

Peacock, also the high school principal, takes over a squad that won the team state title last spring. About three-quarters of his team was also on the D.C. trip.

Highlights for the boys at Grand Valley included Rick Miller taking second in the pole vault at 12-6. Gavin Chupp. cleared 10-6. Alex Newton was eighth in the 200 meters in 24.8 seconds.

The Wildcats have other standouts including their cross country runners, who led Evart to second place last fall: seniors David Zinger and Logan Hammer. Peacock noted that Hammer will also help the team out in other events.

Seniors Alex Newton and Nathan Struble will also provide points for the Wildcats. Jacob Hopkins is expected to help out in the warmups and Jacob Fortune in the 400.

Max Hodges, another cross country standout and John Danley will be in various races and other events. Chapman Long in the pole vault and Santana Scott in the distances will also score points.

Evart will compete in the Highland Conference.
