Evart tops Morley Stanwood; advances to district final

HESPERIA — Preston Boyd scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to lift Evart to a 52-49 victory over Morley Stanwood in the Class C boys basketball district semifinal at Hesperia.

The Wildcats advance to Friday’s final against Shelby.

Evart controlled the pace of play from the opening tip, leading 14-8 at the end of the first quater and 21-15 at halftime.

“Evart did a good job of controlling the clock possession by possession and they executed,” Morley Stanwood coach Josh Bull said.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 31-24 at the end of the third quarter only to watch the Mohawks battle back. Morley Stanwood tied the game at 42-42 and had a shot at the end of regulation to win the contest, but missed.

That sent the game into overtime.

Morley Stanwood led by four with two minutes remaining, but couldn’t finish it off as Boyd led the comeback. Jesse Lang added nine points for Evart.

“We didn’t have an answer for Boyd in the fourth quarter and overtime,” Bull said.

Morley Stanwood was paced by Tyler Hanks with 16 points, while Travis McCuaig netted 15 points. Adam Wheeler finished with eight points for the Mohawks.

Morley Stanwood shot more 3-pointers (26) in the contest than 2-pointers (25).

“That was not a good recipe for success,” Bull said. “(Evart) did a good job on the boards.”
