Evart team celebrates victory over Marion

MARION — Evart’s football team picked up a lopsided 49-0 victory over Marion on Friday.

Jacob Fortune went 6-for-14 for 129 yards and two touchdowns through the air while Jacob Hopkins hauled in four receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Derek Bowen rushed for 70 yards and a score on 12 carries while Jamin Drake had 79 yards on five carries.

Bowen had eight tackles and an interception return for touchdown on defense.

“I thought our kids struggled a little bit coming from an emotional high against Beal City, being really up for that (the previous week),” said Evart coach Pat Craven. “I think they struggled a little bit coming out of the gate emotionally Friday night with Marion. After we got into the flow of things, I thought they executed fairly well. We did some things on defense we’re real happy about and caused some turnovers. We were active in shutting down their running game and shutting down their quarterback. We’re pleased with that.”

Evart (4-1, 2-1) will host Pine River for homecoming next Saturday. The winner will receive the Armed Forces trophy which goes to the victor of this rivalry. Pine River won it in 2010 and Evart has taken it the last two seasons.

Proceeds go to the VFW ‘s Unmet Needs organization.

Pine River “has a real athletic group of skill players and throw the ball really well,” Craven said. “They’re running a new offensive scheme this year. We’ll have to work hard to shut down some of their spread stuff and play well in the open field.”

Craven said he’s been pleased with the play of his middle linebackers Robert Burge and Larry  Van Buren.

“Jacob Fortune has really been throwing the ball quite well to Jacob Hopkins,” Craven said. “We ran the ball for 360 yards. We came into that game wanting to establish our run game and trying to get some positives out of that. Our running backs ran hard. We had a couple of big plays from Jamin Drake, and Jacob Fortune and Derick Bowen ran the ball real hard for us also.”
