EVART -- Evart area resident Mark Sochocki had a quiet winter in terms of outdoor activity, but things are starting pick up.

He said he did some fishing on Saginaw Bay recently although ice surfaces in that area had been shaky earlier on.

"They started going out fishing," Sochocki said. "We stayed in the shallows just catching perch and there were some good days when we went. I never saw as many people fishing like that on Saginaw Bay before. It was incredible. That happened around Feb. 25. We never did fish deeper than four to five feet of water during the winter on Saginaw Bay.

"They started late. It was odd all the way around. The ice is gone and I may be out and about this weekend. I have not hunted since grouse season closed at the end of December. "
