Evart sophomore runner off to strong start

EVART — Sarah Nelson has emerged as one of the top runners for Evart’s cross country team this season.

Nelson is a sophomore for Evart who didn’t run last season, but played volleyball instead. She was encouraged by others to run cross this fall. She decided to try out and has done well. She didn’t run cross before but was in track.

Her only running during the summer was “chasing my dog,” Nelson smiled. When her practices started on Aug. 12, she officially became a cross country runner.

“I’m doing what I thought I could do,” she said, adding that pacing herself is the key to having a strong race. She’s been working with senior Mara VanOrder to figure out how to effectively run a race

“I do good at the beginning and the end,” she said. ‘I’m still kind of learning but I’m getting there.”

Nelson admitted that it’s “tricky” to run a course for the first time, Before the season ends, Nelson wants to get at the 20-minute mark. She’s trying not to over-exert herself in any part of the race.

Nelson has been happy with her decision to run cross country. Cooler weather will make her a better runner, she predicted.

Evart has a home conference jamboree Oct. 20.
