Evart sophomore poised for strong track season

EVART — Dillon Danley is a sophomore on this year’s Evart boys track team but figures on playing a key role in the Wildcats’ bid to defend their MITCA state and Highland Conference titles.

Last season, Danley participated in the long jump, 200, 400 relay and 800 relay. He’s anticipating being in those same events this spring

“In the state finals, I picked it up to get us to fourth place (in the MITCA 800),” he said, adding that this season, “I hope we win the conference. I think we have a good shot at that. I’d like to see our (400) relay take the school record. For long jump, I think I should be able to get a 19-footer for long jump.”

Dillon said his best individual event is long jump. Jacob Hopkins is the leader in the jump for Evart.

“It will take a lot of practice and hard work,” he said, adding that in the 200, “I’m hoping to at least get a 24.9.”

His previous best in that event is 25.2.

Last week, the Wildcats were practicing mostly indoors. They will be at the Grand Valley indoor meet Friday. It’s likely the Wildcats won’t be competing outdoors until next week.

But Danley is confident the team could be in good form within a couple of weeks and ready to compete.

“I think we have a chance to make it back to (MITCA) states,” he said. “I don’t know if we’ll win it or not. it will be up to us.”

He’s also hoping the team can win the Highland and regional meets.
