Evart sophomore having solid season on defense

EVART — Jericho VanScoyoc has been delivering the goods as a free safety in his sophomore season for Evart football.

A highlight this season for VanScoyoc was an interception against Manton.

“I jut read the coverage pretty well and felt like I had a good read on the ball and felt I could get it done,” he said.

It was VanScoyoc’s first interception with the varsity.

“It felt like a good moment,” he said.

The biggest challenge for VanScoyoc, a first-year varsity player, has been getting used to the various offenses he sees. But he’s confident he’s able to effectively step into that role.

“You have to know the coverage, you have to know what they’re doing,” he said.

VanScoyoc also has been working on his tackling techniques.

Evart was 2-5 after a win over Beal City and losses to Lake City and Pine River.

“I think we’re doing OK,” VanScoyoc said. “We could definitely do better. Just read the ball and make sure they have the ball.”

He said recently that the goal would be to try to “shut down” Beal City, ranked No. 1 in Division 8. That’s what Evart did in a 17-7 win over the previously undefeated Aggies.

“It’s been fun,” VanScoyoc said. “I really like the experience.”

The Wildcats are at home against Tri-Unity Christian on Friday.
