EVART — Evart’s softball team is back in action this week after Saturday’s home Cat Classic.

The Wildcats have Highland Conference games Wednesday at Lake City and Friday at Pine River.

Big Rapids 6-9, Evart 4-7

Evart lost two close games on May 6 at Big Rapids.

Evart led in the second game and stranded several runners in scoring position.

“We were getting runners on all night, but just couldn’t seem to put hits together to bring them around to score,” coach Jeff Bressler said. “We played without a couple key starters, and first baseman Lorraine Foster played through a couple minor injuries and still had a pretty good night.”

Evart brought up Syd Sanders from the JVs for the game. “We  had to play her in a position she hasn’t worked at much this season,” Bressler said. “Utility player Breanna Crawford had to take over in left field, stepped up and did a pretty good job there as well.”

Sam Bressler pitched both games and turned in “solid performances with eight strikeouts in game 1 and six strikeouts in game 2,” Jeff Bressler said. “(Big Rapids’) third baseman and catcher made a couple really good throwdowns and picked off a runner on third once in each game. No fault of the runners, Big Rapids just beat us on those with two really good exchanges and we got caught.

“Those two plays were probably game changers for us in each game. It was not Evart’s best performance, but we have come a long way from where we started at the beginning of the season.

Bressler said his team is headed in the right direction.

“These girls are working hard in every practice and we are playing very competitively, (Coaches) really enjoy working with these girls and seeing them become better ball players individually and as a team.
