Evart softball team falls in doubleheader

EVART — The Evart Wildcats lost 11-4 and 20-3 to Maple-City Glen Lake in the season opener Thursday for the Wildcats. Glen Lake is 2-1. Jessica Penny was the winning pitcher in both games.

Madison Hill got the save in the first game for Glen Lake.

Kerry Pleva had two home runs in the second game for the Lakers. Melanie Kolenda also had some key hits.

“This is only the second time we’ve been outside, including practice,” said Glen Lake coach Gary Galla. “We haven’t practiced outside. We have a foot of snow on our field.”

The game had been scheduled for Wednesday at Glen Lake but was moved to Evart for Thursday when the weather was nice.

In the first game for Evart, Loraine Foster had a two-run single in the fifth inning, while Shayna Rushing added an RBI single and Sam Bressler had an RBI bounceout. Those runs cut Glen Lake’s lead to 8-4.

Taylor Rushing had a homer in the second game for Evart.

“That was our highlight in the second game,” said Evart coach Jeff Bressler.

Sam Bressler took the pitching loss in the two games.

Despite the losses, Jeff Bressler acknowledged that it was a positive factor to be outside for the first games of the year.

“We’ve got some work to do,” he said. “We know what to work on now.”

The Wildcats are scheduled to be at Montabella Thursday, at Chippewa Hills Saturday and at Beal City Tuesday.
