EVART — It was challenging first year for Cheryl Speet and her Evart softball team.

But the preparation for what Speet and the Wildcats hope will be an improved second season is taking place this summer.

The Wildcats had two girls who earned first-team all-district honors with Livia Hopkins and McKenzie Kimball.

Kimball had a .262 batting average and played a strong defensive center field.

“She was much needed in the outfield,” Speet said. “That’s where I had to play her.”

Hopkins, a catcher and shortstop, batted .394 with 28 total hits, 19 singles, five doubles three triples and a home run and had 65 putouts defensively.

Next season, Kimball will be a senior and Hopkins a junior.

The Wildcats had an early-season doubleheader sweep over Montabella plus a Division 4 district win over Mesick and narrowly lost to Marion in the district title game. “They had a girl who hit a home run and it took the wind out of our sails,” Speet said. “We were in the lead until the fourth inning.”

Those were some highlights behind a 4-27 season.

The Wildcats graduated five seniors. Hopkins is the only one playing travel summer ball.
