Evart softball players earn all-conference accolades

EVART — Three seniors represented Evart on this season’s all-Highland Conference softball team.

Pitcher-first baseman Chelsea Bengry and catcher-shortstop Magdalen Hyde were on the first team while third baseman and first baseman Dayna Casey earned honorable mention status.

All three batted in the high .300s.

Bengry was the team’s No.1 pitcher.

“Magdalen and Chelsea, I brought them up three-quarters of the way through their sophomore season and they played varsity for me,” said Evart coach Josh Johnson. “I coached them their freshman year as the JV coach.

“I was pleased with the way they responded to playing with younger players. It was neat to watch those seniors help those girls along. We won eight games. We got better by the end of the season.”

Johnson announced that he will not be returning as Evart softball coach. He’s had the position for three seasons. Prior to that, he was the junior varsity skipper.

Johnson said his three sons are coming up in the Little League level and he wants to start focusing on baseball.

“I’ll be going to the baseball diamond next year,” he said.

Johnson said the softball program will need to boost its numbers. There was no JV team this season

“We had a pretty solid group for a couple of years,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he’ll continue to be JV boys basketball coach.
