Evart set to host baseball tournament

EVART — Evart’s baseball team will be host a tournament Wednesday to close the summer season.

Evart coach Josh Johnson said on Monday a schedule of games would be determined later, but it was likely two doubleheaders would be played on the varsity and junior varsity diamonds. Evart, Pine River, Grant, Reed City and Fremont are expected to compete.

Evart played Pine River to a 4-4 tie in nine innings on Sunday. Andrew Bengry, Josh Dorn and Layne Nadig shared the pitching duties for Evart.

The Wildcats lost 8-2 to Grant last Thursday in a single game. The game started at the varsity field, but was delayed because of a heavy downpour and wet grounds. It was moved to the junior varsity field. Bengry, Dorn and Nadig also pitched in this game.

“Andrew also pitched well,” Johnson said. “After that long rain delay, I took him out.”

Dorn and Nadig had hits against Grant.

Johnson also had a game where he invited former Evart players and next year’s high school performers.

“We came to the field and played baseball,” Johnson said. “I think we’ll continue that sporadically during the summer.”
