Evart set to host Roscommon footbal team on Friday

EVART – Evart is coming off a 34-21 Highland Conference football win on Friday over Lake City and will look to improve its record to 3-2 when it hosts league foe Roscommon on Friday.

“Our kids played really well on the defensive side of the ball for most of the game,” Evart coach Pat Craven said of the Lake City battle. “As we found our offensive footing, the defense held strong. At halftime we worked to clean up some mistakes and made a couple adjustments to how Lake City was defending us. Donovan Balowski's pick six on the second play of the third quarter was a huge momentum shift and our offense never looked back after (Danny) Witbeck hit (Brayden) Cass for a long touchdown strike.

“We really called off the dogs to begin the fourth quarter. Lake City has really put it on us over the years when they've been really good and we've been a bit down. We did our best to see the big picture and make sure all of our number two's got plenty of action in the fourth quarter.”

As for this week, “we will continue to focus on individual and group improvement,” Craven said. “We have an opportunity to continue to grow as a team and we are excited for that challenge.

“Roscommon continues to improve and hang around with their opponents. They have some really nice pieces that will require us to play well. Their quarterback and receivers are good and they have a tremendous offensive and defensive lineman who has disrupted every team he's played.”

A balanced attack will be critical, Craven added.

“We need to run the football so that our passing game is given the openings it needs to be effective,” he said. “As we work to secure the ball and win the turnover battle, our team can prosper.

“We continue to grind and play extremely hard and fast. I love this team's energy and attitude. Our kids are extremely coachable and are willing to sacrifice individual accomplishment for team success.”
