Evart senior set for final sports season

EVART — Mara VanOrder will be closing out a glittering four-year varsity sports career at Evart this spring with girls track and field and is looking to graduate on a memorable note.

VanOrder and her teammates made their 2016 debut in a meet at Sparta prior to the spring break.

“We performed really well against some Division 1 and Division 2 schools,” she said.

In that meet, VanOrder was first in the 400 meters (1:03.02), first in the 4x100 relay (54.51) and was fourth in the discus (69-10).

“Mara VanOrder will be one of our top athletes in the middle distance and sprints,” Evart coach Todd Scott said.

In the 400, Van Order wants to break one minute and get the school record.

“In the 200, I plan on breaking 27 (seconds) and being all-state in that,” she said. “Our 4x1 team is going to make it to state, and in discus I plan on breaking 90 feet and getting into 100.”

The 400 will be her best event.

“This year, I definitely think I know how to run the race better,” VanOrder said. “I know the situation. I need to work on my finish.”

The 200 will be her second best.

“I need to come out of the blocks as fast as I can,” VanOrder said, “and keep that cadence throughout the finish.”

She’s anticipating that her final season will be her best one.

“Manton is always a good squad because they have a lot of numbers,” VanOrder said. “I plan on Pine River having some athletic younger girls.”

Evart was scheduled to be at Vestaburg on Tuesday and will be at Roscommon on Friday.
