Evart senior reflects on only year of basketball
EVART — The winter sports season has basically ended for area girls and boys athletes who are starting spring practices this week.
But senior Sydney Cleland of Evart is one athlele who will have plenty of fond me0mories from this past winter.
Cleland played on the basketball team for the first time. She was one of seven players for coach Larry Brown.
“I always wanted to play basketball and never quite had the ambition,” she said. “I talked to my friend Taylor (McLachlan) about it and she said to try out. I tried out. I ended up liking it.
Cleland had never played the sport on an organized level before, including junior high.
“It took quite awhile and I’m still not completely comfortable with everything,” Cleland said after the season ended with districts in late February.
When she was on the court, “I’m usually a post and there for defense,” Cleland said. “I’ve improved a lot. I improved on boxing out and on defense. I wish I would have started my freshman year.”
Her highlights? That was simple to answer.
“It was playing basketball with the girls on the team,” she said. “They were great.”
