EVART – The Evart girls basketball team is hoping seven proves to be the magic number.

Along with senior Lydia Wetters, the Wildcats will be going with seven players on its varsity roster. Wetters and Saige Nabozny are the only two seniors on the squad.

The Wildcats opened their season Tuesday against Lakeview. They play Friday night at Chippewa Hills.

“We’ve made a ton of progress,” Wetters said. “Almost all of our team doesn’t have varsity experience. Saige and I are the only ones that do. It’s similar to volleyball. It’s improvement and getting our speed up to the varsity level and getting more confidence handling the ball and getting better every day.”

With seven varsity players, her teammates will have to stay out of foul trouble.

“We’ll be in shape really quickly, we don’t have many options,” Wetters said. “That’s OK. The girls we have are quick and they’re strong and will be able to play a full game if we need them to.”

In practice, Wetters has been playing a lot of post and wing.

“The way our offense runs, you can really be all over,” Wetters said. “They’re maybe multiple times during the game I’m taking the ball up court. It really just depends.”

Defense is her strength, Wetters said.

“I like being aggressive and getting in there and getting that rebound,” she said. “My shot gets better year after year. I’ve improved a lot. Last year on varsity, just getting the feel of the game, this year with all the different drills, I can tell my shooting has improved. I’m planning on getting more points this year.”
