EVART —  Veronica Lofquist was one of only two Evart seniors on the 2022 state runner-up team and was able to endure some challenging health issues to help the Wildcats have a memorable season.

“We had to lead by example, keep the team up and had to do everything we could to keep the girls in it,” Lofquist said.

In a 3-2 loss to Millington in an eight-inning state title game, Lofquist drew some key walks to help her team’s effort.

“You have to be really disciplined and do what the team has to do,” she said. “You have to be careful and don’t swing at things you can’t reach. When they’re there, jump on them. If not, let them go and wait for the next one.”

Lofquist had to overcome health issues coming into the season.

“Around December, I got mono and I got really sick,” she said. “I got tonsillitis, I’m not sure when. I was really sick. When I was able to, I had to start working hard. I’m very proud of myself for coming as far as I did.

“There was a couple of months when I didn’t know if I’d be able to come out. I was hoping I’d get the chance. I’ve been tired.”

But on going to the state finals, “I’m proud of the team that we came this far,” Lofquist said.

Coach Amanda Brown commented earlier this year how proud she was of Lofquist’s efforts.

“Veronica has been doing good,” she said. “She is getting back into the swing of things. She had some health issues that have slowed her down a bit. But she is getting stronger every day. It's nice to have her back doing what she can to help her team.”
