Evart senior making contributions to Wildcats’ basketball attack

EVART — Andrew Maxwell is confident his Evart’s Wildcats can reel off several more boys basketball victories before the season comes to an end.

Maxwell and his teammates had one of their best games of the season in late January with a win over Marion.

“It was nice to come back and get a win,” Maxwell said. “It was a lot of energy. We just got out there and scored before we would fall behind. We  need to come out, get ahead, play defense, hit our shots, keep on firing and stuff like that.”

It’s Maxwell’s senior season and his second on the varsity. He’s improved from last season.

“Last year was my first year playing basketball all together,” he said. “I’ve always liked the sport. I decided I should probably play. We had a decent season, but we’ve improved a lot from last year. Now, I’m starting to get some general stuff together and control the fundamentals.”

Defense and aggression are his strengths on the court, Maxwell indicated. He’s working to improve on his scoring.

The Wildcats started 3-0 but then lost six straight before getting the win against Marion.

“It was pretty frustrating,” he said. “We carried in on at practice and kept working. We just have to keep working hard in practice and improving on game days.”

Evart is at McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Thursday.
