EVART --  Evart’s boys basketball team has been battling to try getting closer to the .500 mark and has been hitting various ups and downs in this pursuit.

Senior Bryant Calderon continues to play a key role in the Wildcat attack.

“The first half we were doing pretty good but at one point of the second half I believe our mental state was not there,” Calderon said after a recent close loss against a talented Lake City team. “I know we have the skill and ability to keep it up.”

Calderon had 22 points, which was one of his better evenings of the season and a season high. His previous high was 18 points.

“I feel like I was doing well in mid-range shots and finishing,” Calderon said. “I’m most comfortable with the mid-range shots.”

The Wildcats are 4-9 and were scheduled to be at Houghton Lake on Thursday.

“I feel like we are starting to find a rhythm,” he said. “I feel like it’s going to take teamwork and accountability.”

Calderon is confident he and the Wildcats can be playing their best basketball in the last few weeks of the season when the games are especially important.

Calderon is coming off a standout football season. It’s his second year on the varsity and he’s definitely having his best season.

“In the beginning of the year, I felt I was more of a leader,” Calderon said, adding that defensively “I feel it’s been going pretty good.”

Calderon is usually assigned to guard the team’s other top guard.

“I usually try to take the ball from them, but anything that helps us stop them from scoring,” he said.
