EVART — Jon Hooker is hoping that one special game will propel Evart’s basketball team to great heights for the rest of the season.

Hopkins and the Wildcats had opened the month on a high note with a  52-43 Highland Conference win Feb. 1 against previously unbeaten league team Beal City.

Beal City defeated the Wildcats a few days later in a rematch at Beal City, but the win over the Aggies gave his team plenty of confidence, Hopkins noted.

“You could definitely tell they adjusted to us,” Hooker said. “They knew what we were going to do (offensively).”

Evart, in between the two Beal City games, had defeated Vestaburg 62-42.

“We were patient and ran through our offense” Hooker said. “We had a lot of assists in that game.”

Evart a few days later lost to Beal City in a rematch. But the win over Beal City turned the league standings upside down.

“It showed our potential,” Hooker. “I think I’m playing good. It’s midseason. Everything is clicking.”

Passing has been a strength, Hooker said, adding that he’d like to improve on his outside shooting.

“We’d like to get into a run going into the postseason, finishing strong and winning games,” he said, adding that defensive intensity would be critical.

Evart will be hosting boys basketball districts next week.
