Evart runners bid for best performances at state meet

EVART – Logan Hammer and David Zinger will be running the final cross country races of their high school careers and are hoping for banner performances Saturday in the state finals at the Michigan International Speedway.

The two Evart seniors are also hoping to help the Evart team have a strong state finals finish.

Hammer indicated that the main focus is for a strong team performance at the state meet.

“I’m going for my absolute best time,” Hammer said. “I’ll go as hard as possible. I’m hoping to PR by 30 seconds.”

To do well on the MIS course, “there’s always a muddy corner at the end,“Hammer said. “You want to go out harder during your second mile, get though that muddy corner and give everything you’ve got when you get around that corner.”

The Wildcats were second at  the regionals Saturday at Allendale.

“We all ran well, everyone PRed,” Zinger said. “We ran our hearts out.”

For the state finals, “I want to leave it all out there on the course, it’s my last one,” Zinger said. “It’s important to have a good start. If you get stuck behind a group, it could be hard to recover from.”

Max Hodges, a junior, has been running closely with Hammer and Zinger this season.

“It was cold and wasn’t really windy,” Hodges said. “I went out on my first mile and felt good that day. It was a good finish, too. Right now, I still need to work on my second mile.”

Hodges will bid for even a better time at the state meet.

It’s his third time at the finals.

“Right now, we hope to go down there and do our best,” Hodges said. “We hope to go down and get more PRs.”.
